Question about H1N1, Please Answer.?

Ok so im wondering about the H1N1, obama is calling it a national emergency, but the average flu kills round 37k people per year and swine has killed a couple thousand, so is it more deadly then the normal flu, or is it the same and their just making a big deal because its a new strain, please answer, thanks
