Is the light skin/dark skin issue still an issue?

Well I'm Nigerian but I was born in raised in ATL and you know as a kid I was teased and picked for being darker. I got that a little bit in H.S but now as a adult I rarely get people saying anything about my skin color. Do you think it's just a kid thing and something we have to just grow out of as we get older?
