Does Google send out actual checks?

I was in a tire shop that sells used tires since I need them and saw a check payable from Google for over $500 on the desk of the guy waiting on me. I was curious as to how he got this check but didn't want to ask. Since he sells used tires I wonder if he swapped tires with him or something in order to get the check. Does Google actually send out checks and what are they sending them out for?
